Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does PATHS do and not do?
While PATHS can work with participants who also need a moderate level of psychiatric or therapeutic care, this is NOT what PATHS can offer. We are ordinary people (workshop leaders are not therapists or psychiatrists) working in community with other people.
What PATHS does is work with participants to create a general state of well-being in individuals, and the surrounding culture, potentially reducing the overall pressure on therapeutic services within an institution.
What makes PATHS appropriate for a wide range of people? ....click the arrow -->
The following factors make PATHS workshops appropriate for people who wish to improve their lives through the social-emotional power of community that comes with a consistent group:
All people aspire to a life of fulfillment, challenge, and interest in what they do.
All people have some habits and mindsets that are not helping them, and most people can benefit from learning the practice of reprogramming habits and mindsets.
All people need a support network to feel seen and accepted.
All people need a challenge network to help them learn and grow.
All people need community.
What organizations can partner with PATHS? ....click the arrow -->
Any organization that works closely with people of high school age or older can partner with us. Any type of organization is appropriate, as long as the organization is committed to the work we are doing, has a high level of contact with the proposed workshop participants, and wishes to collaborate with us to develop a positive working group.
What topics are discussed during the workshops? ....click the arrow -->
Two-thirds of the Ongoing Workshop time is designed to give space for participants to use the group format to process challenges they are facing and to share their interests and passions. This means that we cannot be sure what students will bring to the table. We can say that, within the bounds of being respectful of everyone, a very wide range of topics are considered acceptable in PATHS workshops. The first third of the workshop is devoted to exposing participants to concepts that PATHS believes are powerful mental road maps and mindsets. These concepts are specially tailored to achieve the PATHS mission of living joyful and successful lives. (NOTE: Success is determined by the participant’s values, not necessarily in terms of money or status.) For more detail about the PATHS Curriculum use this link.

What is the difference between an Ongoing Workshop and a Hot Topic Workshop?
....click the arrow -->
Participants in PATHS workshops will be taking part in the Ongoing Workshop nearly all of the time. This workshop format is the basis for everything that PATHS does with participants to work towards a joyful and successful life. Once a group of PATHS participants has established high levels of trust among themselves they may be ready for an especially challenging and exciting experience like a Hot Topic Workshop. This workshop chooses a topic that is designed to be highly controversial within the group of participants and uses the PATHS hot topic format to discuss this topic openly and respectfully. The goal of this exercise is to develop participants’ ability to listen to opposing views with respect and open-mindedness as well as to articulate their views calmly and clearly in situations when passions can run high.
